Job Description

The Senior EHS Site Manager will lead the development and execution of Environment, Health, Safety & Sustainability (EHS&S) strategies to drive continuous improvement and risk reduction across the site. This leadership role oversees a team of EHS professionals and serves as the technical expert for all EHS&S matters, ensuring regulatory compliance and fostering a safe and sustainable work environment for employees, contractors, and visitors. This high-visibility role offers immediate impact and strong potential for career advancement within the organization.

 Location: Onsite, Richards Manufacturing (Irvington, NJ)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the EHS&S team to meet performance goals related to injury prevention, risk mitigation, regulatory compliance, and sustainability.

  • Provide day-to-day direction, performance evaluations, and career development for EHS direct reports.

  • Cultivate a proactive, compliance-driven EHS culture through strong leadership engagement, cross-functional collaboration, and employee participation.

  • Oversee EHS&S reporting, including regulatory permits, internal metrics, and corporate communications. Prepare reports for local, global, and external stakeholders.

  • Ensure the site’s EHS&S programs meet all applicable regulatory requirements, corporate standards, and industry best practices.

  • Lead on-site EHS&S initiatives and collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver results.

  • Manage and maintain all site EHS permits, licenses, and certifications.

  • Oversee the event reporting and investigation process in alignment with company standards, including root cause analysis and preventive measures.

  • Fully implement the Serious Injury & Fatality Prevention (SIFP) program, focusing on precursor recognition and mitigation.

  • Develop and manage the site’s EHS&S budget with an emphasis on cost-effectiveness and strategic investment.

  • Represent the company during audits and site visits from regulatory bodies, customers, and third-party assessors.

  • Monitor and drive improvement through leading indicators such as unsafe conditions, near misses, and behavioral observations.

  • Implement and manage an EHS Management of Change (MOC) program.

  • Conduct formal audits of site operations to ensure compliance with environmental regulations (CAA, CWA, RCRA, TSCA, SARA) and local/state laws.

  • Ensure compliance with occupational safety standards, including OSHA, NJDOL, LOTO, confined space entry, machine guarding, industrial hygiene, and emergency preparedness.

  • Stay informed of evolving EHS regulatory landscapes to maintain proactive compliance.

  • Align site EHS programs with enterprise and business unit strategic goals.

  • Provide regular updates to the Plant Leader, EHS&S Director, and enterprise leaders on compliance status, corrective actions, audit findings, and associated costs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health & Safety or a related field required.

  • 15+ years of EHS experience in a heavy manufacturing environment with significant regulatory oversight.

  • CSP, CIH, CHMM certifications strongly preferred.

  • Bilingual (English and Spanish) preferred.

  • Experience with EHS excellence frameworks (e.g., VPP, ISO 45001/14001) highly desirable.

Key Competencies:

  • Deep expertise in hazardous waste, stormwater, wastewater, air compliance, SPCC planning, EPCRA reporting, and emergency response.

  • Strong technical knowledge across multiple safety programs, including LOTO, machine safety, compressed gases, and industrial hygiene.

  • Demonstrated success in achieving Scope 1, 2, and 3 sustainability goals.

  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills; capable of influencing across all levels of the organization.

  • Proven experience in managing and developing direct reports.

  • Ability to navigate competing priorities, make data-driven decisions, and adapt in a fast-paced environment.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, database applications, and EHS management systems.

  • Experience leading the implementation of a formal EHS management system within a manufacturing setting.
